General Information

LOCATION: Approximately 12 miles from the Appomattox Courthouse National Historical Park. Holiday Lake is a reservoir in Appomattox County in the state of Virginia. The latitude and longitude coordinates for this reservoir are 37.3918 -78.6364, the UTM coordinates are 17 S 0708897 – 4140561. and the altitude is 446 feet (136 meters).

Appomattox County is the geographic center of Virginia and is indicative of the Piedmont with gently rolling terrain. The county is best known in history as the site where on April 9, 1865, General Robert E. Lee surrendered to General Ulysses S. Grant, bringing an end to the Civil War. The war cost more American lives than World War I , II, and the Korean War combined. The McLean House was where it all happened. The Appomattox Court House National Historical Park, maintained by the National Park Service, is a 1,362-acre park with a village that has been restored to re-create the surrender.

Drive Time : Northern Virginia, three and a half hours; Richmond, two hours; Tidewater/Norfolk/Virginia Beach, four hours; Roanoke, two hours

FROM LYNCHBURG/ROANOKE: Take 460 East to Appomattox, turn left onto Route 24 East toward Appomattox Courthouse, drive 7 miles, turn right onto Route 626, drive 5 miles and keep left onto Route 723. The Center is at the end of Route 723.

FROM RICHMOND: Take Route 60 West past Buckingham Courthouse, turn left onto Route 24, drive 10 miles, turn left onto Route 626, drive 5 miles and keep left onto Route 723.

FROM FARMVILLE: Take Route 460 West to Prospect, turn right onto Route 626 follow Route 626 10 miles, turn right onto Route 723. The Center is at the end of Route 723.

FROM CHARLOTTESVILLE: Take Route 20 South turn right onto Route 15 South, drive 1 mile, turn right onto Route 60 West past Buckingham Courthouse, turn left onto Route 24, drive 10 miles, turn left onto Route 626, drive 5 miles and keep left onto Route 723. The Center is at the end of Route 723.

1:30 – 3:45 p.m. Arrival and check-in, set-up. Welcome, Introductions, Orientation

3:30 – 5:30 p.m. Vendor Area Open

6:00 – 6:45 p.m. Dinner

7:00 – 8:00 Tracking White Nosed Coatis on the Arizona Borderlands - Dr. Christine Haas

8:00 – 9:00 Bird Track& Sign ID and Interpretation  - Dan Hansche

7:00 – 9:00 Human Remains - Mark Gleason

9:15 – 12:00 a.m. Informal storytelling, discussions, and organization of “early riser” activities.

Check-in continued; Vendor area open until 10:00 p.m.

Saturday October 11th:

6:30 – 8:00 a.m. For early risers: Informal tracking time and Daybreak Thanksgiving

8:00 – 8:45 a.m. Breakfast; Check-in continued

10:30 – 12:00 a.m. Informal gatherings, maybe night tracking (bring your favorite tracking light), campfire songs, stories, etc. Vendor area open until 10:00 p.m. Hospitality area with snacks open.

Sunday October 12th:

6:30 – 8:00 am. For early risers: Informal tracking time and Daybreak Thanksgiving

8:00 – 8:45 a.m. Breakfast

9:00 – 9:45 a.m. Pack-up, break camp, Vendor Area open until 11:00 a.m.

Come and share your progress in tracking techniques, education, evaluation, ongoing research, and what you or your organization has to offer the world of tracking. This is a planned 2+ day symposium that will include many opportunities to listen to and talk with other trackers, as well as spend time in the field demonstrating and examining tracks and sign.

We can accommodate approximately 100-175 trackers participating in this year’s symposium.

• Individuals who have been extensively published in the field of tracking may request presentation approval without completion of the proposal process by contacting the Program Committee directly.
